Information and Resources

As patients, we want to be well informed about our conditions, in order that we can be well informed about our treatment and take the best care of ourselves.

The Thyroid Trust team is committed to improving access to clear and reliable  information for people affected by thyroid disorders.

Follow the Information Sources links below, for comprehensive patient information on all thyroid conditions and related topics, approved by medics.

Browse our Expert Insight articles, on topics of key interest to thyroid patients.

Watch our Information Videos.

See our Events pages for details of talks where you can learn more about topics of interest.

Read about the New NICE guideline on thyroid disease assessment and management, published on 20th November 2019, here.

See our
Information page with the latest T3 news and resources, including all national guidance, if you are a patient experiencing any difficulties with your healthcare provider in relation to prescribing liothyronine, T3.
If you are a patient or a doctor looking for information on liothyronine, L-T3 you will find plenty in this section of our site and on the links below. Issues with access to L-T3 are a key aspect of our work. You may like to refer to our latest brief L-T3 Information Sheet for an up to date overview of the status of this medicine within the NHS.
If you  want to complain about the healthcare service you have received in the UK we recommend the resources on the Patients Association website.

Information Sources

There's a lot of information published online about thyroid disorders. However a lot of it may be unreliable, sometimes people are trying to sell you something, may be out to promote themselves, or may simply not be fully informed themselves. When doing your own research we strongly advise sticking to trusted sources of information, such as those listed below.
British Thyroid Foundation - comprehensive patient information on all aspects of thyroid disease, approved by medics.

British Thyroid Association - see the latest guidance for patients, GPs and endocrinologists, particularly helpful for clarifying the guidance around T3/liothyronine.

'Understanding Thyroid Disorders' book by Dr Anthony Toft, published by the British Medical Association's Family Doctor Series. (Dr Toft was the speaker at our November 2018 event and is now an Honorary Trustee of The Thyroid Trust).

The Society for Endocrinology’s ‘You and Your Hormones’ website

Thyroid Cancer Alliance patient information website

Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust (Association supporting patients with thyroid cancer)

Hypoparathyroidism UK (Association supporting patients with hypoparathyroidism)

British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons information leaflets for patients undergoing surgery on their thyroid gland

Thyroid Eye Disease Charitable Trust

TEAMed information for professionals on thyroid eye disease, including links to materials for Graves patients.

Thyromind website - created with funding from Mind Charity in 2003, this website is still the most comprehensive online resource on mental health and thyroid disease.

The UK Iodine Group is a a committee of experts in thyroid, nutrition and public health. The website is packed with useful information about the importance of iodine and includes a page of FAQs regarding iodine and thyroid disease.
