Research Participation opportunities

The Thyroid Trust shares the following research studies for information only and does not endorse them. All research studies are conducted by third party external sources from the charity so please contact them directly if interested.

Research participation opportunity for people diagnosed with Thyroid Eye Disease

MindSight Research are currently working together with their client to recruit participants for a usability study looking at an autoinjector device that would be used to deliver medication for those with active Thyroid Eye Disease.  The purposes of the study is to get direct feedback from potential future users, understand their needs and get an insight into how they would find using the device our client is researching.

The feedback from these sessions is used to ensure that the product brought to market is suitable for the intended users; this will include using their insights to make changes to the system to ensure the autoinjector device is as safe and usable as it can be for the intended users.

The reason it is important for us to speak to those diagnosed with active Thyroid Eye Disease is because different conditions have different needs and characteristics that we'd like to understand further to ensure the device has been designed for those who it is intended for.

Taking part will involve an in-person 60 minute in person session where participants will be asked to handle the device and perform some simulated tasks. They would not be required to inject any medication. Those participating can also be accompanied by a family member or friend if they so wish.

Those participating would receive £130 as a thank you for their valuable contribution to the study. There would also be a payment for an accompanying family member or friend.

If you would be interested in learning more about the opportunity, we would love to hear from you.

British Thyroid Foundation – Cardiff University
T3 Safety Study Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in Liothyronine-treated patients: a linked record cohort study

Cardiff University are conducting a study to determine the risk of heart problems in individuals who were treated with the drug Liothyronine (T3) which is sometimes used to treat patients with hypothyroidism.

If T3 is shown to be safe it will give doctors more confidence to prescribe this drug safely when indicated.

To undertake this study, the research team intend to use historical clinical records of patients who attended a private clinic in Birmingham, UK, between the 1990s and 2013. The clinic has now ceased operating but the Vaccine research Trust, a charity, holds the records of patients treated in that clinic.  In the proposed study, the research team plan to link treated patients with outcomes such as heart disease, strokes, or death.

However, in order to access the clinical records held by VRT, the research team are required to offer patients an opportunity to opt out of their data being used for the study. As such they have asked us to advertise the study by placing patient opt-out information on our website as a patient organisation.

To learn more about the study and the opt out process, please click here

Please note that the deadline for opt-out is the 31st of December 2023.
