Get involved in research!

Much more research is needed into thyroid disorders of all kinds.  This page provides details of opportunities for patients to contribute to current research projects and links to further information.

Visit our Research References page for links to key studies and reviews that have been concluded and published in peer reviewed journals.

Check out our interview with Professor Margaret Rayman, a patient and a scientist, to learn more about some of the latest research findings on thyroid function and nutritional science.

Research Projects

E-MPATHY study into the experiences of patients with hypothyroidism.

As members of Thyroid Federation International, an international network of thyroid patient support organisations, we were pleased to be asked to help distribute  an new important survey, for researchers who want to understand the experiences of patients with hypothyroidism across the globe.  they aimed to get 10,000 responses and accordingly we encouraged our thyroid friends network to take the survey.

The survey is now closed and we are awaiting results. You can read more about this study on the
TFI website.

The research company,
Picker are the founders of the approach of Person Centred Care.  The academic board for this study  includes leading thyroidologists, Petros Perros- UK, Laszlo Hegedus - Denmark, Enrico Papini - Italy, and Endre Nagy- Hungary.

You can also find out more about this study on our blog.

We initially shared the pilot survey , for the above study, for patients with hypothyroidism and their friends and family during summer 2020.

FYI we had some questions about some aspects of this survey, including some which were sent to us by people in our network, which we sent to the researchers and TFI.

British Thyroid Foundation and Sheffield Hallam University Study on Hypothyroidism

Researcher, Joe Straw, is looking at the impact of hypothyroidism on quality of life. If you have congenital or acquired hypothyroidism, blood test results within the reference range (defined as euthyroid) and are treated with levothyroxine (only), you are invited to complete this survey.

Thyroid Patients and Social Media

PHD student, Judith Schossboek, is researching the use of social media by thyroid patient individuals and groups. If you'd to help add to her knowledge she is conducting interviews. Click here for full information on her research.

Patients Association survey informing NHS England

Have you been denied treatment on the basis of cost, or a ‘CCG decision’?
Complete the Patients Association survey and share your experiences with them. Your views will help inform their response to NHS England. It will take around 10 mins to complete.
Liothyronine  (L-T3) for hypothyroidism is one of the treatments being looked at.  More info: https://bit.ly/2LfLtgR

NHS England review of 2017 consultation on "items which should not be routinely prescribed in primary care"

you can also respond directly to NHS England consultation, and attend meetings on the review of the 2017 consultation:  Items which should not routinely be prescribed in primary care. To find out more and take part in the  update and consultation on further guidance for CCGs  click here.

(we would encourage you to do both if you have the energy)

Survey for anyone treated for thyroid cancer

Picture
The American Thyroid Association (ATA) is collecting information and opinions from patients about their experience with thyroid cancer to better inform medical providers about how patients experience the challenge of thyroid cancer diagnosis and treatment. ATA encourages anyone with a history of thyroid cancer to take this survey. Feel free to disseminate this survey link broadly, and encourage others to take the survey. ATA also encourages all thyroid healthcare professionals to share this survey with their patients.

Survey results will be compiled and discussed by thyroid leaders at the American Thyroid Association Satellite Symposium: The Spectrum of Thyroid Cancer, from Surveillance to Systemic Therapy on Friday, March 16, 2018 at McCormick Place West in Chicago, IL. Subsequently, survey results will be posted online with free access to the public as well as made available through publication.

Your responses are anonymous and should only take a few minutes to complete.

The survey is intended for anyone with thyroid cancer - it is not limited to North America. If you are not in the USA, just enter the name of your country in the “ZIP code” field.
