Research References

This page lists significant thyroid studies and reviews published in respected medical journals. It is far from exhaustive of course and does not try to be. The references will be added to over time.
Please let us know if you are aware of a study you think should be included here.

Graves' Hyperthyroidism

Treatments for Graves' Disease have remained largely unchanged for 70 yrs and sometimes don't work, or can lead to lifelong treatment for hypothyroidism, but now new options are being investigated.  This review, by Laura C Lane, Tim Cheetham, Petros Perros and Simon H S Pearce, provides a comprehensive summary of the recent advances and various stages of development of the novel therapeutic approaches to treat Graves’ hyperthyroidism. by  https://academic.oup.com/edrv/article/41/6/bnaa022/5897403#

Hypothyroidism

If you are looking for a comprehensive list of resources on hypothyroidism, this may be a real help to you. This list has been compiled by a thyroid patient and volunteer with The Thyroid Trust. It provides a brief overview of relevant topics sampled from various literature on the subject. These resources are intended for informational purposes only and should not be considered as medical advice.
Access to this information may be helpful, but it should not encourage self-diagnosis and cannot replace professional medical care. Any changes to lifestyle or treatment should be made with medical advice.
The Thyroid Trust does not endorse any specific approach, and inclusion in this list does not imply agreement with the opinions expressed by the authors or organisations. Please read critically.  Hypothyroidism Resources.docx - Google Docs
An important new article, Time for a reassessment of the treatment of hypothyroidism, by John E. M. Midgley,  with Anthony D. Toft, Rolf Larisch, Johannes W. Dietrich and Rudolf Hoermann was published in BMC Endocrine Disorders, 18th April 2019.

The following studies were mentioned in Dr Anthony Toft's talk at The Thyroid Trust November 2018 Information Event.
  1. Jonklaas J, et al 2018 Physician choice of hypothyroidism therapy: influence of patient characteristics. Thyroid 28: 1416-1424.

Covid-19 and thyroid function

An important new study looking at thyroid function tests in Covid19 patients was published, in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, on 12th November 2020, showing TSH and T4 levels are lowered during Covid19 but return to their original levels once the patient is followed up with afterwards. TSH and thyroid hormone levels are affected by many illnesses which is why you would not normally have a thyroid function test when you know you have a virus or infection of any kind.
