Pamela's story

My doctor thought my thyroid disorder was depression!

For just over three years I was back and forth to the doctor with symptoms and wasn’t ever tested for anything. Not a single blood draw was taken. I was, instead, offered counselling and anti-depressants for what he said was a clear cut case of depression. This is despite me repeatedly saying I was not a depressive person however my mood is absolutely low because of not feeling well.

I can describe it best as “I thought I was losing my marbles”.

For me, the impact on my brain’s ability to function far outweighed the physical symptoms of weight gain, constipation, cold intolerance etc.

Anyway, fast forward three years and by chance I happen to be put in front of locum doctor. I tell her the same story and that for three years I’ve refused to take any anti depressant.

She ran a full blood panel including thyroid. My TSH returned at 62.4 and my FT4 was almost non existent. I was profoundly Hypothyroid. I was also positive for Coeliac disease antibodies and later diagnosed via endoscopy.

If only my GP had tested these things and listened to what I had to say.

Thank god for that locum doctor!
