Thyroid Champions Roundtable

Lord Hunt of Kings Heath
Monday 17th October 2022
5pm - 6:30pm
Online Zoom meeting

Join us for a Roundtable Discussion and Open Forum for thyroid patient leaders and supportive professionals.

Are you a patient leader or advocate, standing up for thyroid patients, committed to raising the profile of thyroid disease so that it gets more attention and treatment options are more freely available? Would you like to be more connected to others on the same journey and work together on initiatives that can make a difference?

Following our successful event in July we are holding a second Thyroid Champions event in October. This will consist of a roundtable discussion and open forum and will explore how thyroid patient advocates can work together more effectively to bring about change and help achieve our vision of a world where people affected by thyroid disease are taken seriously, treated well and better understood; where thyroid disease is widely talked about, where patients get all the information and support they need, and can feel empowered with their conditions.

This event will again be facilitated by our good friend and advisor Lord Hunt of Kings Heath, a past Labour Health Minister and now an active peer in the House of Lords, who has been a tireless supporter to thyroid patient groups over several years and has a good understanding of many of the issues we face.

The discussion will include patients who have worked with The Thyroid Trust and our partner organisations on the ongoing campaign to improve access to T3 on the NHS which you can read more about here.

This event aims to build on campaigning achievements to date and previous discussions from events in 2020 and 2021, which you may like to watch on The Thyroid Trust YouTube channel here before joining this session.

#TalkThyroid Butterfly Trek at the Seaside

Billy Kenber
Wednesday 25th May 2022
12pm - 12:30pm
Broadstairs seafront

Join Lorraine Williams, Director of The Thyroid Trust, and friends, on World Thyroid Day, for an afternoon at the seaside, walk and beach picnic in the pretty Kent coastal town of Broadstairs.

As the thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland: for the last two years, Lorraine has undertaken a fancy dress solo run between Broadstairs and Ramsgate to raise awareness of thyroid disease. This has become something of a tradition, so if you would like to join in by dressing up you are more than welcome to do so, but don’t worry, you can wear what you like! Just come and enjoy a nice day out and chat with some thyroid friends by the sea.  If you’d like to get yourself a Thyroid Trust T shirt they are available on our website in return for a donation.

Meet at midday in front of the Visitor Information Kiosk, by the Royal Albion Hotel garden, overlooking the golden sands of Viking Bay. Enjoy a stroll around the town until 1:30pm then reconvene for a picnic on the beach - with the option to take a seat at the Funicular beach café instead if you’d find that more comfortable. Bring your own snacks to enjoy - and something to sit on if you don’t want to get sandy. There is a lift or the option of stairs down to the beach. The aim is to picnic at or in front of the Funicular Café at the bottom of the main stairs to the beach - just along from the site of the Inflatable Giraffe, which is usually located in front of the exit to the beach lift.

Our events are free to attend but we welcome donations, if you are in a position to support our work and would like to do so please consider making a donation.

You can support Lorraine’s Seaside Trek by donating on her JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lorraine-williams-ttt-22

An Evening with Billy Kenber discussing Sick Money

Billy Kenber
Tuesday 29th March 2022
7pm - 8:30pm
This event took place on Zoom, see the recording here

Join us with Billy Kenber for a discussion of his new book, 'Sick Money: The Truth About the Global Pharmaceutical Industry'.

The discussion will be chaired by leading endocrinologist, Dr Mark Vanderpump.

Billy Kenber is an award-winning investigative journalist who, in 2016, broke the story in The Times that the specialist thyroid treatment, liothyronine, an old generic medicine, had increased in price by 6000% in the preceding ten year period.

In his dramatic new book Sick Money: The Truth About the Global Pharmaceutical Industry, Billy explores the idea that medicines have become financial assets for drug companies and says that the way drugs are priced and who gets access to them can be dictated by shareholder value. As well as writing about liothyronine, he cites the example of an American hedge fund manager who increased the price of an HIV AIDS pill from $17.50 to $750 overnight and of a children's cancer drug left to expire - seemingly because it was more cost-effective than continuing to make it available to patients who needed it.

Billy’s book suggests that worrying industry issues have emerged; such as the price rises of liothyronine; and the reluctance to invest deeply in vaccines, because, once a disease is ‘conquered’, profits fall and so does the eagerness to put research money into them. This is particularly concerning for chronic conditions like diabetes and thyroid disease. Unless we take action, Billy argues, we risk a dramatic decline in the pace of drug development and a future in which medicines are only available to the highest bidder. Is he right?

Do we not need the drug companies, warts and all, to step up the plate, both to provide existing medicines that are known to help patients at a reasonable cost and to develop new treatments, particularly when we have to tackle a pandemic like Covid-19? Come and join the discussion. We’d love to hear your views on all of this.  Billy will also discuss his experience of hearing about the impact on patients of the issues his book has uncovered and his thoughts on what needs to happen next.

Billy is very kindly donating his time to talk to us about his book and answer questions.

Please make a donation of any amount to secure your place. We suggest a minimum  amount of £5, which will help support our work to do more on the issue of improving access to liothyronine and our wider work, to make things better  for thyroid patients, including running more Support and Information events on Zoom and face to face. Our vision is of a world where people affected by thyroid disease are taken seriously, treated well & better understood; where thyroid disease is widely talked about, patients get all the information & support they need, can live a good life & feel empowered with their conditions.

You can buy a signed Hard Back copy of Sick Money from West End Lane Books

Unbelievably, it will be the first time we’ve been able to meet face-to-face since 2019 and we are so looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Thyroid Cancer Cafe

Saturday 18th September 2021
11am - 12:30pm
This event took place on Zoom

September is thyroid cancer awareness month. Bring your own coffee and join us in our virtual 'thyroid cafe' to talk about your experiences with thyroid cancer, moderated by Judith Taylor who is herself a two-time thyroid cancer survivor. Here are a few things we might talk about (but your ideas are more than welcome):
  • When and how were you diagnosed?
  • What information and support have you had during your thyroid cancer 'journey'? How could it be improved?
  • Did you use the 'low iodine diet'? What was your experience?
  • Did you have RAI? If so, were you given Thyrogen or did you follow the thyroxine 'withdrawal' method? How was your experience?
  • Do you have any ongoing issues after your surgery?
  • We might also talk about returning to work and financial/economic issues, sometimes known as 'the right to be forgotten'.

Everything you say will be confidential and the discussion will not be recorded or shared anywhere afterwards.

Find our more about thyroid cancer awareness month.

Getting the best treatment for hypothyroidism - Part Two

Wednesday 15th September 2021
6pm - 7:30pm
This event took place on Zoom

Hypothyroidism is a chronic lifelong condition which should be easy to treat. However, not everybody who takes thyroid hormone replacement treatment feels fully back to normal. Our speaker Simon Pearce is Professor of Endocrinology at the Translational & Clinical Research Institute, Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University. He is editor of the European Thyroid Association Journal and President of the British Thyroid Association.

Here is the video recording of Part One and the outstanding Q&As from that session which Simon kindly answered in writing after his talk.  We suggest you watch the video before attending Part Two.

Our events are free to attend but we welcome donations, if you are in a position to support our work and would like to do so please consider donating when you book your place.

Thyroid Cafe - Let the sun shine in with Karen George

Saturday 7th August 2021
11am - 12:30pm
This event took place on Zoom

The past 12-18 months have been incredibly difficult for everyone. For some of us living with a thyroid condition, life has been more challenging than ever. Trying to keep ourselves safe and virus-free whilst also managing our thyroid conditions has inevitably lead to some people feeling isolated, anxious and alone.

The Thyroid Trust was created so that no-one ever feels alone with thyroid disease.

With summer on its way and the hope of brighter days ahead we want to help banish the darkness and put the sunshine back into your life. So join us for our next Thyroid Cafe and “let the sunshine in”.

The cafe will be held over Zoom and moderated by Karen George, who has lived experience of Graves’ Disease and is a founding Trustee of The Thyroid Trust. Bring your own coffee!

Numbers for this event will be limited to ensure that all who attend can participate in the discussion.

We are reliant on donations to be able to continue our vital work, supporting, informing and advocating for thyroid patients. If you are able to, please donate what you might have spent if this meeting was taking place in a real live cafe, instead of online!  If money is tight for you though, don't worry, we still want you to come along - donations are entirely at your discretion, but please be generous if you can.

University of Birmingham IMSR Festival event power of the patient voice speakers
Patients have an important role to play in advocating for research related to the health conditions we experience.  This event is an opportunity to discuss the opportunities and challenges around doing this and to learn from other organisations representing different patient groups, AMEND and Verity, with clinicians and researchers at the Institute of Metabolism & Systems Research (IMSR),  University of Birmingham. Our Director, Lorraine Williams, is one of the speakers, along with artist Vicky Roden who has hyperthyroidism and has worked with the scientists at IMSR on a project designed to improve treatment for Graves patients.

All welcome

Creative Thyroid Cafe

7th June 2021
11am - 12.30pm
Took place on Zoom

Join artist Vicky Roden and friends, to talk about creative artistic expression inspired by our thyroid conditions.

If you have artworks you'd like to share please bring them to show - we'd love to see them! We might even read some of the poems from Fahmidan Journal’s special issue published on World Thyroid Day. We will limit numbers for this event to ensure everyone is able to join in with the discussion.

As an artist with lived experience of hyperthyroidism, Vicky has worked collaboratively with The Centre for Systems Modelling & Quantitative Biomedicine (SMQB) at the University of Birmingham,  on an innovative creative collaboration at the interface between art, mathematics, biology & healthcare.

Vicky's practice encompasses a variety of media including textiles, embroidery, taxidermy and Live Art. Her work explores death, ritual, and points where women have historically found personal power and agency. As a former Hyperthyroid patient, with researchers at the SMQB working mathematical modelling with software, imaging and experimental data to create new clinical diagnostics for thyroid patients.

For World Thyroid Day Vicky is also producing a fun prerecorded video creative workshop, demonstrating how to make fondant thyroids - so look out for that too!

Our events are free to attend but we welcome donations, if you are in a position to support our work and would like to do so please consider donating when you book your place.

Thyroid Cafe - to help plan for International Thyroid Awareness Week 2021

26th March
11am - 12:30pm
Took place On Zoom

International Thyroid Awareness Week is 25-31 May 2021 - with World Thyroid Day at the start.

We're holding an informal online Thyroid Cafe event for everyone interested in helping come up with ideas and get involved in activities for the week, to make the most of this opportunity

We'd love to see you and hear your ideas of things we can do together, and as individuals, during that week. We want to raise awareness of thyroid disease and also encourage people to do some fundraising to support our work: to make things better for thyroid patients in the UK.

We are a tiny charity and still very new, but we have big ambitions and we need to grow to be able to achieve more in the future.
Can you help? Would you like to be part of the conversation?

We'll kick off at 11am on Zoom, bring your own "elevenses".

Register using the Eventbrite link above and you'll be sent the Zoom link and dial in details.

We'll start by sharing what we did last year and our initial outline plans for 2021, then we want to hear any new ideas that anyone might have, to make more impact, reach more people and make more of a difference. If you want to commit to being involved and saying what you can do, or let us know what help you might need to realise any plans you might have, we'll be thrilled and hope we can work with you!

The more of us who take action and support each other, the more of an impact we can make, together

26th September 2020
11am - 12:30pm

September is thyroid cancer awareness month. Bring your own coffee and join us in our first virtual 'thyroid cafe' to talk about your experiences with thyroid cancer, moderated by Judith Taylor who is herself a two-time thyroid cancer survivor.

We might also talk about returning to work and financial/economic issues, sometimes known as 'the right to be forgotten'.

Everything you say at any of our thyroid cafe events will be confidential and the discussion will not be recorded or shared anywhere afterwards.

Jenny is a teacher, community artist, Member Pioneer at The Co-operative, Service User at Edgehill University and creator of CAN (Create Another Narrative) affirmation cards.
Jenny Allen portrait
Having experienced a rare presentation and difficult journey to diagnosis with postpartum thyroiditis and on-going thyroiditis Jenny has become a master of the career ‘jigsaw’, bouncing back and managing life around symptoms with little support.
For three years following a diagnosis of Postpartum Thyroiditis Jenny’s symptoms cycled from explosive to subtly debilitating and back again but with a TSH often remaining in the ‘normal’ range Jenny met many dead ends in terms of care.
Jenny shares with us how she overcame her lowest points, how she developed confidence in her voice and how affirmation helped her to really believe in the knowledge she had of her own body – changing her mindset and ultimately leading her to a life changing diagnosis and much needed support.
CAN (create another narrative) affirmation cards are created as a result of Jenny’s own experiences, they aim to not only strengthen the patients voice but to raise awareness of the challenge’s faced when, like Jenny, illness does not fit the box.

Hypothyroidism from both ends of the Stethoscope
Dr Renee Hoenderkamp, speaker at The Thyroid Trust May 2020 Online event on hypothyroidism from both ends of the stethoscope
Dr Renée is an NHS GP with, additionally, her own successful private aesthetic clinic. She is the resident GP for BBC Radio London, OK! Magazine and Express Newspapers as well as  a blogger for GP magazine Pulse and regular medical vlogger. She has a keen personal interest in health and nutrition and strives to combine this with her approach to medicine.
She has personal experience, as a patient, with hypothyroidism and sat on the NICE Committee for the development of the new NICE guideline for thyroid disease assessment and management, where she was a strong advocate for access to more personalised approach to care, particularly for those patients who may not thrive on levothyroxine alone. She does not shy away from the sometimes controversial aspects of effective management of an underactive thyroid. We are delighted to have her as our speaker for this event.

We recorded this event and are working to make the footage available online and get all the outstanding questions answered, since we ran out of discussion time.
