6pm - 7:30pm This event took place on Zoom Hypothyroidism is a chronic lifelong condition which should be easy to treat. However, not everybody who takes thyroid hormone replacement treatment feels fully back to normal. Part 2 of this talk will continue to explore the complex evidence concerning wellbeing, hypothyroidism and thyroid hormone replacements. Our speaker Simon Pearce is Professor of Endocrinology at the Translational & Clinical Research Institute, Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University. He is editor of the European Thyroid Association Journal and President of the British Thyroid Association. Here is the video recording of Part One and the outstanding Q&As from that session which Simon kindly answered in writing after his talk. We suggest you watch the video before attending Part Two. Our events are free to attend but we welcome donations, if you are in a position to support our work and would like to do so please consider donating when you book your place. |
Thyroid Cafe - Let the sun shine in with Karen GeorgeSaturday 7th August 2021
11am - 12:30pm This event took place on Zoom The past 12-18 months have been incredibly difficult for everyone. For some of us living with a thyroid condition, life has been more challenging than ever. Trying to keep ourselves safe and virus-free whilst also managing our thyroid conditions has inevitably lead to some people feeling isolated, anxious and alone. The Thyroid Trust was created so that no-one ever feels alone with thyroid disease. With summer on its way and the hope of brighter days ahead we want to help banish the darkness and put the sunshine back into your life. So join us for our next Thyroid Cafe and “let the sunshine in”. The cafe will be held over Zoom and moderated by Karen George, who has lived experience of Graves’ Disease and is a founding Trustee of The Thyroid Trust. Bring your own coffee! Numbers for this event will be limited to ensure that all who attend can participate in the discussion. We are reliant on donations to be able to continue our vital work, supporting, informing and advocating for thyroid patients. If you are able to, please donate what you might have spent if this meeting was taking place in a real live cafe, instead of online! If money is tight for you though, don't worry, we still want you to come along - donations are entirely at your discretion, but please be generous if you can. Creative Thyroid Cafe7th June 2021
11am - 12.30pm Took place on Zoom Join artist Vicky Roden and friends, to talk about creative artistic expression inspired by our thyroid conditions. If you have artworks you'd like to share please bring them to show - we'd love to see them! We might even read some of the poems from Fahmidan Journal’s special issue published on World Thyroid Day. We will limit numbers for this event to ensure everyone is able to join in with the discussion. As an artist with lived experience of hyperthyroidism, Vicky has worked collaboratively with The Centre for Systems Modelling & Quantitative Biomedicine (SMQB) at the University of Birmingham, on an innovative creative collaboration at the interface between art, mathematics, biology & healthcare. Vicky's practice encompasses a variety of media including textiles, embroidery, taxidermy and Live Art. Her work explores death, ritual, and points where women have historically found personal power and agency. As a former Hyperthyroid patient, with researchers at the SMQB working mathematical modelling with software, imaging and experimental data to create new clinical diagnostics for thyroid patients. For World Thyroid Day Vicky is also producing a fun prerecorded video creative workshop, demonstrating how to make fondant thyroids - so look out for that too! Our events are free to attend but we welcome donations, if you are in a position to support our work and would like to do so please consider donating when you book your place. |

Special Patients' Voice eventSaturday 29th August
11am - 12:30pm FREE donations welcome but entirely optional Online event - watch the recording online Jenny is a teacher, community artist, Member Pioneer at The Co-operative, Service User at Edgehill University and creator of CAN (Create Another Narrative) affirmation cards. |
Having experienced a rare presentation and difficult journey to diagnosis with postpartum thyroiditis and on-going thyroiditis Jenny has become a master of the career ‘jigsaw’, bouncing back and managing life around symptoms with little support.
For three years following a diagnosis of Postpartum Thyroiditis Jenny’s symptoms cycled from explosive to subtly debilitating and back again but with a TSH often remaining in the ‘normal’ range Jenny met many dead ends in terms of care. Jenny shares with us how she overcame her lowest points, how she developed confidence in her voice and how affirmation helped her to really believe in the knowledge she had of her own body – changing her mindset and ultimately leading her to a life changing diagnosis and much needed support. CAN (create another narrative) affirmation cards are created as a result of Jenny’s own experiences, they aim to not only strengthen the patients voice but to raise awareness of the challenge’s faced when, like Jenny, illness does not fit the box. |
