International Thyroid Awareness Week and World Thyroid Day 2021 25 - 31 May 2021

Picture
Our director, Lorraine, and a group of thyroid friends in Thanet ran a route round Broadstairs that spells T.H.Y.R.O.I.D and gottogether afterwards for a picnic on Ramsgate Sands on 30th May to celebrate International Thyroid Awareness Week and enjoy some of the poems in the special issue of Fahmidan Journal that came out on World Thyroid Day. Could you do something similar in your area? Butterfly picnics, runs, walks or cycles can all help raise awareness and if friends and family are willing to sponsor you can also help raise vital funds to support our work to make things better for people affected by thyroid  disease!  Activities like this can take place at any time, not just during special weeks or months of the year.

Our theme for International Thyroid Awareness Week this year was Thyroid Champions - because thyroid patients need all the champions we can get! If you're planning to do your own fundraising you can set up a fundraising page and link to the Thyroid Champions campaign - you can also find and support any of our other Thyroid Champion pages and see how we're getting on towards our fundraising target. We'd love to hear what you're up to if you choose to get involved and  let us know if you'd like your activity featured on this page!

Mary Saunders, running in January 2021

"The Thyroid Trust has been a very supportive resource to me. In a short space of time this small charity has made its mark amongst the various charities and organisations that help patients. It has arranged many very interesting events with highly relevant experts and continues to fight for better diagnosis and treatment for all thyroid patients.
Throughout January 2021, during lockdown when we were only allowed out to exercise, I decided to make a donation of £2 to The Thyroid Trust for every run I undertook. I usually run two to three times per week and managed to raise £20. I invited friends and family to donate too and was delighted to have raised a total of £140!"

Thank you Mary! We're inspired by all that running, what a great personal challenge for January. And we're so grateful to you and your friends and family for getting behind us in 2021!

International Thyroid Awareness Day and Week 2020

25th - 31st May 2020
Find out what we did and and see who got involved in fundraising for #ThyroidAwareness in 2020. International Thyroid Awareness Day and Week is organised by Thyroid Federation International, the international umbrella organisation for thyroid patient organisations.

Because the thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland, we went for a butterfly theme this year - and we're going to stick with this for further awareness raising activities in the future, including for thyroid cancer awareness month in September. It's a fun and distinctive theme and really helped get people talking.
  • Lorraine ran in her home town, dressed up like a butterfly and was joined by Sam and Victoria in TTT Tshirts, who ran 10K. Between them the three raised an astonishing £1270!
  • Helga bravely round London landmarks, dressed up like a butterfly and raised an oustanding £1,000!   Read Helga's story.
  • Karen cycled an epic 25km, with a special butterfly theme and raised a fantastic  £290! Read Karen's story.
  • Stephen, our lovely treasurer, ran £10K round London, raising a further £240!

In addition to our fundraising activity, we managed to get some brilliant media coverage in the Isle of Thanet News, 24 Fingers social channel, BBC Radio Kent and The Daily Express. The butterfly pictures and creative fundraising ideas really helped get journalists attention and support.

Michelle Varchione very kindly led a Special Self Care Session on 28th May where we talked about the importance of moving and being kind to ourselves and had the chance to practice self massage and some gentle chair based exercises. The brilliant Kath Bell who runs the BTF Birmingham Group joined us in full butterfly regalia! We all had a really fun time learning about ways we can nurture and care for ourselves. Michelle is an inspiration, you can read her story here and she has very kindly offered to lead further Self Care sessions for us so look out for the date of the next one on our events page.

Asics London 10k

Eleanor, Karen, Helga, Lorraine, Mike, Victoria, Sam and Stephen had been planning to run the Asics London 10K on 5th July 2020, to help raise vital funds for our work?  This event is now, of course, not going ahead.

Huge thanks to our brilliant volunteer, Deepa, for organising our team entry and to our amazing runners. This would have been the first time we've done anything  like this. We only completed our charity registration last May. It's a big deal for us to get a team together to take part in this challenge event. We are waiting to hear from the organisers what plans they can come up to replace this years event and the Team are looking at other activities we can do instead.

Mike Reid, 2.6 Challenge, Marathon and 10k runner!

MIke Reid is running Milton Keynes Marathon and London 10k for The Thyroid Trust
Mike signed up to run the 2020 Milton Keynes Marathon on 3rd May and the Asics London 10K on 5th July, to support The Thyroid Trust, because he recognises, as a new and worthwhile charity striving to make things better for people affected by thyroid disease, we need lots of support!

During the uncertainty of the Coronavirus, he has now done the 2.6 Challenge - running 2.6 miles as many times as he can on 26th May

Thank you Mike for being one of our 2020 Fantastic Fundraisers and for all your help at our events at TfL's Palestra building in Southwark and for encouraging your employers, Transport for London, to support us too.
It means the world.

A huge thanks from us to Mike, all his TfL colleagues and friends who are getting behind his bid to raise vital funds for our work.

You can donate to support Mike's Marathon fundraising efforts on Just Giving. and here is his 2.6 Challenge fundraising page.
